Patented in 1816 by Reverend Dr Robert Sterling, this heat-engine was designed to replace the notoriously dangerous steam engines during the industrial revolution. Stirling's invention never replaced the steam engines on a large scale, but it did drive the invention of better grades of steel and safer steam engines.

But how does it work?

Simple apply a heat source that is more than 20c above the environment temperature, such as a cup of tea, and place your Sterling Engine on top to see it go! Where steam engines require very high temperatures and pressures to function, the Stirling Engine uses the external heat source to cause expansion and contraction of the gas inside the chamber, which in turn drives the piston. Elementary!

Looking for a new pen? Sick of ball points? Try the old fashioned Quill for added quirkiness.

Quills were the most popular writing instrument in the 16th to 19th centuries. Primarily from a large bird feather, such as a goose, traditional quills were used on parchment and vellum, which were the perfect mediums for a quills delicate nib. The feather quill was hand cut with a carefully cut slit that would allow the ink to rise into hollow part of the feather but would not split when in use. A quill was even used to write the American Declaration of Independence.

However in the early 19th century, the Dip pen became the preferred writing tool, due to its tougher nib made from metal. Dip pens get their name due to the need for constant 'dipping' into an ink well. It was after the Dip pen that the preliminary ball point pen was invented and is still used today.

Our quills at Professor Plum's are actually a combination of the Quill and Dip pen. The metal nib is connected to the feather, combining the best elements of both pens. The nib is perfect for calligraphy and due to its ability to draw thin and thick lines. However our quills are also great for any Harry Potter fans or for those who want a flamboyant pen! Great gift for many ages, our Quills are a little bit of history in your hands.

Small Chess Set With Travel Bag

When it came to writing a new blog post in 2013, the team at Professor Plum's thought we should start the new year with a post about a new product. However, as much as we love our gadgets sometimes it’s refreshing to go back to basics with a review of our Chess Sets. Our Chess set with travel bag is the perfect gift for a beginner or a chess addict.

Basically, Chess is a class logic game that requires skill and strategy, and allows its players to perfect tactics and phases so that they can corner their opponent in the end game and call check mate. Chess can be played at a relaxed level, where players go off instinct and logic and play at their own pace, or at a professional level, such as speed chess, where the competitors use stratagems and tactics to bet their opponent as quickly as possible, using as few moves as possible.

Chess has been revered by many prolific people throughout history. Benjamin Franklin himself was an avid chess player, going so far as to write an article called 'The Morals of Chess’ (1750) where he stated that 'the Game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement; several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired and strengthened by it".

However, Chess can be a great pastime for anyone, not just those who are experts. It is a game that can be picked up easily, played at different levels, with different ages and is one of the most universal and admired games in history. This makes it the perfect gift for almost anyone in your life and a great skill to teach to younger children.

So if you want to play chess, like Benjamin Franklin did, or just as a relaxed game with a friend, our Chess Set is perfect for you.

In 1876 Dmitri Mendeleev perfected a table to illustrate the elements that are the building blocks of our universe. Mendeleev arranged all the know elements and even predicted properties of undiscovered elements that turned out to be accurate.Today there are 118 know natural and synthesized elements ranging from Hydrogen to Ununoctium. Elements are arranged into two major groups; metals and non metals. From there they can be divided into corresponding sub categories. An element is placed within the table depending on its atomic number, electron configuration and recurring characteristics. Although the periodic table is the most popular representation of elements, there are many alternates, such as the 3D Mendeleev Flower that highlights the relationship between elements in a different way.

Just can't get enough of chemistry? Periodic Coasters are the perfect addition to any geeks home.

Ever wonder what’s going on inside your brain? Well you won't be the first or the last to ponder such an essential and mind boggling question. Today, modern science has the benefit of technology to investigate the workings of your noggin, but back in 18th century, there wasn’t too much in the way of MIRs. Still that did not dissuade German physician Franz Joseph Gall from trying to comprehend the brain. Phrenology is a pseudoscience that revolves around the basic premise that brain as an organ of the mind and localized areas of the brain are responsible for different emotions, traits and senses. Whilst this is not too far from the truth, Phrenology takes it step further by basing a person’s attitudes and personalities with corresponding bumps and lumps located on their head. For example the left part of your forehead, according to a phrenology head, is for 'literary, observing, and knowing', whilst the area near your right ear is for 'destructiveness'. Luckily for those of you with a lump above your right ear, Phrenology is not based on any scientific research or case studies, more of a guess, or trial and error. However, the Phrenology head remains a quirky addition to any study and an easy conversation piece that has been featured in Sherlock Holmes to Doctor House's office!

Four hundred years ago Galileo discovered that liquids change in density as temperature changes. This revelation lead Galileo to develop a rudimentary thermometer, which was perfected by his protégés Torricelli and Viviani.

The Galileo thermometer is comprised of a glass cylinder which contains glass spheres of different and specific weights, suspended in liquid. Each glass sphere is coloured and labelled with its temperature. Each glass sphere’ specific weight corresponds with a temperature and one can read the current temperature by looking at the glass sphere that is the lowest hanging sphere within the top floating group. The theory behind the thermometer is that when temperature rises, the liquid in the glass cylinder becomes less dense and spheres slowly sink. On the other hand when the temperature decreases the spheres will rise. This thermometer is as useful as it is striking and the perfect gift for those looking for something quirky and scientific.
